Beach Tennis

Beach Tennis is a rapidly-growing sport with a bold aim: to become the leading beach sport for professional and junior athletes worldwide. It is a highly aerobic sporting activity practiced in the sand, typically by the sea. The sport can be played by all ages and all playing abilities - a perfect way to spend time with your friends and family under the sun.

How to play

Beach Tennis is a vibrant sport that is fun, engaging and easy to play. The basic rules are summarized below:

Court

Similar in size to a beach volleyball court, 16m long x 8m wide

Net

The net is 1.8m high for men and 1.7m for women.

Equipment

Paddle Rackets (no strings) and Stage 2 (low compression "orange") balls are used.

Scoring

Exactly the same scoring system is used as for regular tennis, except with the permanent use of no-Advantage, after Deuce. Plus, there is no second service and no service let. A 10-point match tiebreak in the third set was introduced in 2020.

Playing the game

The game is predominantly played between doubles teams, although singles can be played on a narrower court (4.5m). Under and overarm serves are permitted and either member of the receiving team may return the service. A point is won if the ball hits the ground in the opposing court or if the opponents hit (or serve) the ball out or into the net.

History

Beach tennis emerged in Italy in the early 1970s when tennis players on vacation in Lido degli Estensi (Ferrara), Italy decided to try out tennis with tennis rackets using the existing volleyball nets already installed. In 1976 it was played for the first time, with the rules as we know them today, in Torredembarra, Spain. Also in Torredembarra was played the first championship in 1978. Since then (with few interruptions) it takes place on the same beach every year. Over the years, the sport spread to the beaches along the coast of Italy, and it is estimated that today there are more than 1,600 beach tennis nets along the coast of Italy, and that number does not include the constantly growing number of inland and indoor courts. An estimated 250,000 Italian beach tennis players have made the sport so popular that the infrastructure for tournaments has taken on incredible proportions
